1. Acquire picture of sprite, methods include stealing off the internet or just running the game and hitting PrtScn 2. Open in MSPaint (I find it makes this stage a little easier) and reduce the image to a square (important) that borders the sprite 3. Zoom right in and change all background/un-wanted pixels to a single colour that isn't featured on the sprite/"wanted" pixels 4. Save as a png file 5. Open in GiMP, click [Layer -> Transparency -> Add Alpha Channel] (shortcut: Alt+L -> A -> H) 6. Use "Fuzzy Select" or "Select by Colour" tools to highlight your background, delete it. 7. Turns out GiMP actually has a non-filtered upscale option perfect for sprite work built in, how did I not see that before today?

If you've got any requests for sprite-based dock icons feel free to leave them in a comment. I make no guarantees though, the easier the sprite(s) in question are to get hold of/reach in-game the more likely I am to accept. Cave Story comes with full sprite sheets in the data files so I'd be happy to accept any requests for that. Yume Nikki I'm yet to finish so as long as it doesn't involve too much of a wild goose chase I'll be happy to accept most icon requests for that too. Will likely accept any other form of request as long as the game in question is PC based (ROMs included) and more importantly, free.
